Your body. Pretty awesome, right? I mean, literally where would you be without it? Still, we’re pretty down on our bodies: hating on what we see in the mirror, filling it with toxic food, starving it to a certain size, or working it to the bone without making time to relax.
I know I’ve been guilty of all of the above! I suffered from an eating disorder in my teens, abused alcohol in my 20s and early 30s, and have been a lifelong workaholic, spending hours hunched in front of my computer. But over the past few years, I’ve made it a goal to love my body. I want to show my body the love she needs, and the love she deserves.
But knowing how to love your body isn’t easy—and it looks different for everyone. For me, getting into a regular yoga practice has been instrumental in accepting my myself in all my changing states. I’m also mainly sober these days and eat an 80 percent plant-based diet, which helps my body feel more vibrant and energized than ever. Finally, I make a point of saying nice things to my body, and getting regular massages to show her my appreciation!
As we move into bikini season, here are some ways each sign can begin to practice body love. And since your rising sign rules your physical appearance, read for that too!
If you’re an: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Fire signs are all about action and can suffer physical burnout, meaning aching limbs, tight, hunched up shoulders, and bruises and scrapes from all that time on the front line of life. Yes, your body is a machine … and it requires regular servicing to keep it running smoothly! Regular bodywork is a must—even a DIY massage counts! Fire signs also tend to be competitive—so set an intention to not compare your body to others.
If you’re a: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
The earth signs are the most associated with our physicality, and when out of balance can either overindulge or get super regimented about food and exercise. What earth signs are really good at though, is enjoying sensuous pleasure—so taking time to prepare food that’s healthy and delicious is a way to show your body how much you care. If you’re a: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Air signs can spend a lot of time in their heads, treating their bodies a bit like an add on. As such, engaging with any practice that helps you get back into your body will be a way to show your appreciation for the precious physical envelope that she is! Yoga, dance practice, and self-pleasure are all great places to start. Air signs can also be over analytical and self critical, so meditation can help you learn to silence the inner body critic.
If you’re a: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
So sentimental, water signs! Your emo tendencies can pull you into a negative spiral, with a lot of “coulds” and “shoulds” thrown into the mix as you reminisce about times your bod looked “better” to you. To counter this, think about ways you can literally romance your body—like you would your partner! Yes, I’m talking all out rose petals and scented oils in your bath water, beautiful lingerie and fancy dinners for one. Because you’re so SO worth it!
