At the end of June, Mercury begins its second journey to the Underworld beyond the sun for 2026. Our darling chatterbox becomes more fluid and intuitive when traveling the tides of Cancer, and as its retrograde begins, it disappears from the evening sky and beneath the twilight horizon. We all love to hate Mercury retrograde. The flavors of this retrograde are complex, surprising and sharp. Mercury is retrograde from 6/29/26-7/23/26, marking almost four weeks of Mercury’s shift to a morning star and clarification in the heart of the sun.

On 6/29/26 at about 1pm CST, Mercury brushes fingers with Jupiter in Cancer. Jupiter is at the final degree of Cancer and looking forward to moving from his exalted sea deep throne into the bright warmth of Leo. As he is reaching forward to the next chapter, Mercury pauses and looks behind itself to the Underworld. Mercury pauses and begins retrograde at 26 degrees of Cancer in the middle of the afternoon. Jupiter plows forward into Leo a bit after midnight that night. The near miss of Mercury and Jupiter’s exact conjunction is just the first bait and switch of this retrograde period.

Mercury and Jupiter decide to part ways into different signs. Mars and Uranus are clowning towards each other into an electrifying conjunction. This meeting of the Warrior and the Rebel is one of the most anticipated aspects of the year, marking the first time since August 1947 these two have met in the kaleidoscopic circus of Gemini. Mercury retrograde is deeply affected by this conjunction because Mercury is the ruler of Gemini, where Mars and Uranus are meeting. And so, on 6/28, Mars moves into Gemini and almost immediately meets up with Uranus. Mars/Uranus conjunctions are a yearly event, marked by sudden explosive shifts on worldly and personal stages. The circus has come to town, and as Jupiter moves into vibrant Leo, the show begins!

Mercury’s Retrograde Journey Through Cancer

Beginning late in the evening of 7/2, Mars and Uranus breakdance wildly, throwing knives at each other in a dangerous juggling of games until 7/4. You may feel anxious, overwhelmed, hyper energized, suddenly inspired, impulsively crashing out, or all of the above. As Mars and Uranus get bored with their knife games and begin to separate, you may begin to notice that you are feeling low energy, or even exhausted.

7/12 in the midmorning marks a very important meeting of Mercury and the sun. This is called cazimi, which means ‘in the heart’, through the interwoven traditions of Hellenistic and Arabic astrology. Part of the beauty of the Mercury retrograde cycle is the cazimi, when they step into the heart of the sun and are cleansed by bright solar fire. We often find ourselves having moments of lucidity around our thoughts, the way we communicate, and communications between each other during cazimi. Whatever mishaps, miscommunications, mistakes, or mysteries we have encountered so far in the retrograde begin to become clearer and better understood. The email arrives with news, the friend texts you back, the broken thing’s problem is more clearly seen, the schedule is blissfully clear.

On 7/14 before dawn, newly clarified Mercury meets with the moon as she makes her way to her monthly reunion with the sun for a powerful new moon in Cancer. There is a great weaving in the sky that has a shape similar to a crown. New moons are the time of the month for rest, nourishment and reconnection to self. We may find ourselves feeling extra tired especially with the cazimi two days before. Gravity is extra heavy, or perhaps we are having a hard time taking care of our bodies because the work feels like too much. In the northern hemisphere, this new moon arrives during the height of summer. Let the light fill you, rest in water with loved ones and hold each other close. We have survived a harrowing journey at the beginning of the month and deserve time to come back together.

The rest of the retrograde period is marked by lunations with a different rhythm than the last year – some of these moons are harsh, some are soothing, and all are the dance of the moon across the sky as we orient ourselves to the new realities. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are birthing. Mercury is square to Saturn through the rest of the retrograde and until August. This is just a really heavy and slow energy. Let yourself have the time to adjust to who and where you are now. Saturn is, at his core, the principal of time. Let his slowness teach you. There is no rush.

And finally, on 7/23 around 6pm CST, Mercury decides to stop his resolute backward walk, and stand still. There is tension in the air that can feel motivating; the kind where you throw up your hands and say ok! From Zen Buddhism comes the saying, “chop wood, carry water”. There’s a feeling of being stuck between two gears and the engine is grinding. “Chop wood, carry water” is a reminder to bring your attention to the mundane details of your life as tensions rise and fall.

These four signs may feel this Mercury retrograde the most. Here’s how to honor the energy:

Aries: Mercury retrograde is clearing the emotional clutter so you can charge forward with a heart as fierce as your fire.

Gemini: As your ruler, Mercury’s pause is an invitation to finally hear the brilliant ideas you’ve been too busy to catch.

Cancer: Mercury retrograde is asking you to turn that nurturing magic inward. This retrograde is your permission slip to rest and reset.

Capricorn: Slow down, boss. Mercury retrograde is restructuring your foundations so what you build next actually lasts.
