Is Mercury Retrograde Behind the Love Island USA Season 8 Casa Amor Drama?

Love Island USA Season 8 spoilers ahead. Casa Amor is here. According to pop culture astrologer Kayla Murphy, the villa may be entering its most emotionally chaotic stretch yet.

The timing alone feels telling. Casa Amor arrived Sunday, June 21, placing it firmly in Mercury retrograde’s pre-shadow period, just ahead of Mercury stationing retrograde in Cancer on June 29.

So yes, if fans are asking, “Is Mercury retrograde or something?” the answer is: almost. And the villa may already be feeling it.

That matters because the Islanders have been getting too comfortable. Couples have settled in. Everyone has made big promises. Some people are acting like their connection is untouchable.

Casa Amor tends to humble that energy fast.

“Everyone thinks they’re solid right before Casa Amor,” Murphy says. “That’s what makes the timing so dangerous. Mercury retrograde loves a false sense of security.”

Ahead, Murphy breaks down why Mercury retrograde in Cancer could make this Casa Amor especially messy, emotional, and hard to predict.

Casa Amor Arrives Right Before Mercury Retrograde

Murphy has been tracking the season’s astrology since the premiere, and she says this overlap between Casa Amor and Mercury retrograde is sure to shake up what’s been a slow season so far.

“The couples came into this stretch locked in, committed, comfortable, and not really testing each other,” Murphy says. “It’s not in the spirit of the show, and we saw the frustration from bombshells who entered the villa only to get shut out.”

But Murphy says the astrology of summer won’t let that last.

For the first time, production disguised the split as the season’s heart rate challenge. Production divided the couples up, dropped each group into a separate villa, and surrounded everyone with people whose entire purpose is to be tempting.

The choices people make this week come wrapped in hurt, jealousy, and the kind of spite that only surfaces when someone feels betrayed. Mercury’s shadow is already in the air. Emotions are running hotter than usual. People are acting on feelings they haven’t thought through yet.

“Everything happening right now is pure reaction,” Murphy says. “People are hurt, jealous, embarrassed, and acting from that place. Nobody is thinking clearly. When Mercury fully stations retrograde on the 29th, everyone has to sit with what they did and what it means for their coupling.”

Contestants Messiest Decisions Won’t Stay Buried

Mercury retrograde in Cancer has a way of bringing old feelings back to the surface. And after Casa Amor, the villa will have plenty to revisit.

When the men and women reunite, new connections will come out. Old loyalties will be tested. Couples that seemed stable may suddenly have much harder conversations ahead.

“That recoupling is going to be one of the most emotionally raw moments of the season,” Murphy predicts. “It won’t just be about who picked who. It’ll be about those first conversations back: the accusations, the confessions, the things that slip out. Someone is going to say something they can’t take back.”

Some couples may run into jealousy they didn’t expect. Others will have to explain choices they made in the moment. A few could find something real through the chaos. But in a villa where people often say they’re fine before they actually are, this retrograde could make it harder for anyone to move on without dealing with what happened.

Nobody Is Getting the Ending They Think They Are

Mercury retrograde ends July 23, and by then, Murphy says, the villa will look nothing like what fans expect right now.

“By the time retrograde ends, nothing about the couples we’re seeing now will be the same,” Murphy says. “You will be shocked by how some of these love connections end up.”

Islanders who did the real work — who had the hard talk instead of the easy one — make it through intact. Those who didn’t? The retrograde has a long memory. On an island with no phones, no outside noise, and nowhere to hide, the truth finds everyone eventually.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer runs June 29 – July 23. Love Island USA Season 8 airs on Peacock.
