The Virgo New Moon Ritual You Need to Try This September

September brings a powerful New Moon in Virgo on September 10. And, fittingly, that also happens to be my birthday. What a gift to start this practice with you!

But there’s even more happening that day. Uranus, the planet of sudden shake-ups and change, stations retrograde in Gemini for the first time since the 1940s. Venus, the planet of money, beauty, desire, and love, also slips into intense, psychic Scorpio.

Together, this astrology creates an opportunity to set intentions around building a meaningful life rather than a perfect one. It may also push you to rethink certain beliefs and thought patterns while getting clearer about the difference between genuine passion and obsession.

Here’s how to work with it.

Your Virgo New Moon Ritual

Instead of fighting against Virgo’s tendency to overthink, analyze, perfect, clean, and organize, we’re going to put all of that energy to good use.

Start with a pen and paper and answer these three questions:

• Where am I more focused on looking happy than actually feeling happy?
• What does my ideal week look like when I’m not trying to impress anyone?
• When do I feel most grounded, fulfilled, and at peace with myself?

Once you’ve answered them, take a few deep breaths and read over what you wrote. Pay attention to what your answers are telling you about your current life and lifestyle.

Then fold the paper three times. Now we get to the magic.

What You’ll Need

Light a candle — preferably green or white — and grab a bowl. Add a few ingredients that feel powerful or meaningful to you.

For my ritual this month, I’ll be using clear quartz for clarity; loose change, cinnamon, and coffee grounds to attract abundance; salt for cleansing and protection; and fennel, lavender, and peppermint for purification.

Place your folded paper inside the bowl and leave it on a windowsill.

As you do, set an intention for creating a life that feels clear, aligned, focused, and, most importantly, authentic to you.

Then choose one drawer, corner, closet, cabinet, or other small space in your home that you’ve been neglecting and spend some time cleaning and reorganizing it.

Try to do this part unplugged. Put away your phone, skip the social media, and give your full attention to yourself, your intention, and your space.

What This Ritual Is Meant to Reveal

Virgo is the opposite sign of Pisces, which often gets all the credit for being psychic, spiritual, and tapped into the magic of life. But I believe Virgo gives us something just as important: the chance to find magic in the mundane. Sometimes, it really doesn’t take much to make much.

As you move through this ritual, you may realize there’s more than one space in your home—or your life—that needs your attention. It’s easy for notifications, mental clutter, and an endless to-do list to pile up. This month’s astrology is asking you to notice what’s underneath all of it.

New Moon in Virgo reminds you that your life doesn’t have to be constantly improving or perfectly put together to be enjoyed.

Uranus retrograde in Gemini draws a connection between mental clutter and physical clutter. Clearing one may help you make sense of the other.

Venus in Scorpio asks you to notice where passion may have become fixation—and where it might be time to pull your attention back toward yourself.
