That Thing You Thought Was Over? Mercury Retrograde Disagrees
Make us a preferred source
It feels like every other week Mercury is retrograde. Why is that? Well, Mercury goes retrograde three to four times a year, and each cycle comes with a shadow period before and after. Add it all up, and Mercury spends a surprising amount of the year making us revisit something.
This time it’s in Scorpio, the sign of secrets, and Mercury has questions. The Devil card comes to mind: What negativity or manipulation have you learned to live with? And what keeps pulling you back into a cycle you’re ready to leave? Here’s what you need to know.
When Is Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio in 2026?
Mercury enters its pre-retrograde shadow on October 4, at about 5 degrees of Scorpio. Think of the shadow as a preview of the main event, though it may be a trailer you’d rather skip. Mercury stations retrograde on October 24, at about 21 degrees of Scorpio, and turns direct on November 13, back near 5 degrees. It leaves its post-retrograde shadow on November 29.
The pre- and post-retrograde shadow periods matter because Mercury travels over the same stretch of Scorpio three times. A conversation that starts in early October may need another pass in November. Pay attention to what comes up, but don’t assume you know how the story ends from the trailer.
How to Survive Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio
1. Take Note of What People Say
Scorpio asks you to look beneath the surface. During the pre-shadow, notice which conversations leave you with more questions than answers. Does someone change their story? Are you saying “it’s fine” when it very much isn’t? You don’t need to interrogate anyone. Just remember what you heard, including what you heard yourself say.
2. Protect Your Peace
You don’t have to agree to something that goes against your values just to avoid an uncomfortable conversation. Give yourself time to read the details before making a commitment, especially if someone wants an answer right away. And yes, triple-check the text before you send it. Scorpio can write a devastating reply, but you still have to live with hitting send.
3. Rethink the Connections That Drain You
The block button was invented for a reason, and sometimes it feels like a free protection spell. You don’t have to keep calling a “friend” who only has something negative to say. And no, a midnight message from your ex is not proof they’ve suddenly changed.
Scorpio can make an intense connection feel impossible to walk away from. Ask yourself what’s actually there today, rather than holding on to what you hoped it might become.
4. Be Honest
When something feels overwhelming, hiding your feelings can seem easier than explaining them. Try being a little more open instead. You can say you’re hurt, ask a direct question, or admit that you need time to think. Honesty might feel counterintuitive when Scorpio wants to keep its cards close, but it gives the other person something real to respond to.
What Should You Do During the Shadow Period?
Start by looking at what comes up between October 4 and 23. A misunderstanding, an unanswered question, or a familiar relationship pattern may be worth revisiting while Mercury is retrograde. Once it turns direct on November 13, you’ll have another chance to say what you meant or decide what you want to do next.
If you’re feeling witchy, you could make a small Wednesday ritual out of setting an intention for clearer communication. Some people leave offerings such as honey or frankincense for Mercury. A note to yourself about the conversation you want to have works, too.
And if you slip into an old pattern? Give yourself grace. You’re allowed to notice what isn’t working, change your mind, and try again. That’s plenty to work with during this retrograde.
