How to Feel Less Lonely, Based on Your Sign

Whether you’re struggling with a recent separation from a loved one, moving to a new town, or feeling disconnected from others for any other reason, far too many of us experience loneliness in a chronic way. In fact, recent findings from Health insurer Cigna’s 2018 U.S. Loneliness Index found that 46% of Americans report feeling lonely sometimes or always, 47% report feeling left out sometimes or always, 43% report feeling isolated from others, while 43% report feeling they lack companionship and their relationships lack meaning.

A big part of the issue is that we’re not talking about it nearly enough, notes Lane Moore, author of How to Be Alone: If You Want To, and Even If You Don’t. “I wrote How to Be Alone, because I didn’t see my story reflected anywhere, and I think that there are so many people like me who didn’t have the perfect family growing up and now don’t have the perfect group of friends who they see all the time who understand them emotionally and are always there for them, and they haven’t had a lot of luck finding this perfect Jim Halpert guy,” she explains.

Scrolling through Instagram or Facebook and seeing only perfectly-curated glimpses into other people’s lives is only making matters worse. “With social media, we all have these ideas of how our lives are supposed to look, because everybody looks like they have everything we don’t have,” Moore notes. “And I feel like looking at that every single day makes us feel lonelier than we’ve ever felt before.”
