Carrie Turns 50: The Scorpio Season Lessons Hiding in a Horror Classic

Some girls dream of being crowned prom queen. Others discover they can move objects with their minds and unleash a supernatural nightmare on everyone who has ever wronged them. Welcome to Scorpio season, Carrie White!

The 50th anniversary of the film adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie falls on November 3, 2026, making this movie a Scorpio. A horror film feels decidedly Scorpio, especially considering this particular one explores a painfully shy and sensitive teenager with extraordinary psychic abilities and buried emotions navigating secrets, sexuality, revenge, and major transformation, not to mention blood. What could possibly be more Scorpio?

The Psychic Power of Scorpio Season

Scorpio is a fixed water sign ruled by Mars, the planet of action and aggression, and, in modern astrology, associated with Pluto, the planet of transformation, power, and the underworld. Scorpio energy encourages us to explore our deepest desires, fears, and emotions. It’s also a sign associated with psychic sensitivity, intuition, and all of the mysteries of the unseen world.

As a practicing witch and psychic medium, I’m especially fascinated by how Carrie’s supernatural abilities develop alongside her emotional awakening through adolescence. Puberty’s such a transformative, confusing time when one starts to test boundaries, cultivate more independence, and assert one’s power. On top of that, her telekinetic powers become more evident as she matures. Telekinesis and mediumship are very different abilities, but I find it compelling and even relatable to consider a young woman feeling sensitive and discovering a power she doesn’t fully understand, especially at such a life-changing time. Scorpio season invites us to become more curious about our own intuitive gifts and the parts of ourselves we’ve been encouraged to hide. Carrie takes that exploration to a rather terrifying extreme.

Blood, Shame, and the Awakening of Feminine Power

We can’t talk about Carrie without talking about blood. The film famously opens with Carrie experiencing her first period in the girls’ locker room. Having never been taught about menstruation, she’s terrified, and her classmates respond with cruelty instead of compassion. To add to Carrie’s confusion and shame, her religious mother, Margaret, has raised her to believe that sexuality and womanhood are inherently sinful. Carrie’s developing body becomes another source of shame and fear. In astrology, Scorpio rules themes of sexuality, intimacy, vulnerability, and anything that could be regarded as taboo. Its energy asks us to confront the complicated feelings we may have about our bodies, our desires, and our sense of personal power. In Carrie, the very experience her mother teaches her to fear about her body coincides with the awakening of her extraordinary abilities. It’s a powerful moment in the film that shows what happens when women begin to recognize their own strength, especially when the people around them have spent years trying to suppress it.

When Scorpio’s Emotions Boil Over

One of the first visuals that comes to mind when thinking of Carrie is that iconic prom scene. After finally experiencing a moment of happiness and acceptance, Carrie is publicly humiliated when a bucket of pig’s blood is dumped over her head, and what follows is one of cinema’s most horrifying displays of supernatural revenge. Scorpio energy has many beautiful attributes, but in its shadow, it has a reputation for holding grudges. However, I would never suggest that every Scorpio plots revenge; this sign experiences emotions with tremendous depth and intensity. When hurt and anger are buried and left unaddressed, that pain can surface in various ways. As a fixed water sign, Scorpio can hold on to feelings long after an experience has passed. Carrie’s story illustrates the destructive potential of unprocessed emotional pain, particularly when someone has been denied safety and compassion. Her actions are horrifying, but so was her suffering.

One of the most important lessons of Scorpio season is learning how to acknowledge and express our darker emotions before they become destructive. Challenging feelings like anger and jealousy hold powerful lessons, and we have to be willing to listen to what they’re trying to tell us and act accordingly.

What Carrie Can Teach Us This Scorpio Season

Fifty years later, Carrie still resonates because its central themes remain painfully familiar. We can all relate to the very human desire to belong, the fear of being different, the struggle for autonomy, and the complicated relationship between vulnerability and power. These complex experiences extend far beyond the horror genre.

Carrie’s story can inspire us to consider how we treat ourselves and one another, especially when it comes to what makes us different and unique. Are we allowing ourselves to feel our emotions without shame? When we recognize our own power, are we learning to work with it in ways that support our growth and well-being?

As we celebrate fifty years of Carrie, I hope we can appreciate the humanity of the girl at the center of this terrifying story, and remember that our gifts deserve to be nurtured and our emotions deserve space to be understood. Everyone deserves the opportunity to discover who they are without fear.
