Avoid These Travel Dangers

How astrology can clue you into days when extra caution is a good step to take.
Sometimes you need to make that trip, be it fly cross-country or walk to the store. And sometimes the stars are not favorable to so much as getting out of bed. What to do?

Traveling and avoiding accidents have always been a huge part of daily life, and astrology prides itself on making useful predictions. Remember, astrology has been around for hundreds (if not thousands) of years, and that life in the past was much more hazardous (and shorter) than it is for many people today.

Comets were frightening and the stars themselves were misunderstood. Some stars (especially variable stars like Algol in the constellation Perseus) had terrifying reputations.

Today we read those old dire warnings without flipping out and living in fear. We can accept them as cautionary tales and then do what we have to do, if not being more alert. Heavens knows, life today is not hazard-free.

Here are some general astrological guidelines on when to be a bit more alert (if not cautious):

The day before the New Moon is notorious for being a time when more accidents happen. The Moon is at her darkest and is the least sympathetic to our comings and goings. Especially risky are the 15 hours before the New Moon proper, a period called "the hours of Hecate." Hecate was a very powerful, no-nonsense Greek goddess who ruled the crossroads. Respect Hecate regarding where you go and how you get there. Don't live in fear; just be smart. Hecate likes smart.

The day before a Solar Eclipse is more sinister, classically speaking. Princess Diana died in a fiery car crash the day before partial solar eclipse.

The Sun in a Fire Sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is a time when everybody is more energized, and in more of a rush. If you're a Fire Sign, this feels normal for you. The rest of the world, though, may be more wired and less careful. Notice that August, the heart of summer holiday season, is mostly Leo, and that the end of the year/holiday season (with tons of travel) happens in December (late Sagittarius).

The day of the month when the Moon conjuncts Mars can be a day when people are more impatient and confrontational. Don't let any silly little misunderstanding or disagreement blow out of proportion and delay or prevent you from getting to where you need to be.

The day of the month when the Moon conjuncts the star Antares. This beautiful, bright red star is the heart of Scorpio but has moved into to 09 Sagittarius. The name means "rival of Mars." Anger, impatience, restlessness, and road rage are all things to avoid and minimize when the Moon is in the first half of Sagittarius.

The day of the year when the Sun conjuncts Pluto. Whatever you think of Pluto, this can be the most intense day of the year. Don't be sucked into needless arguments or showdowns that do nothing but inconvenience or maybe even injure whomever is involved. Just be sensible and smart. Incidentally, Pluto moves very slowly in its orbit and only a few years ago the Sun conjunct Pluto in the last degrees of Sagittarius. Now, the Sun conjuncts Pluto in early Capricorn. This stretches the hazardous holiday travel period beyond late December and into the first half of January.

In short, be safe, sensible, and use your abundant store of common sense. Stay calm, helpful, and as pleasant as possible if things get dicey. Watch how the stars cooperate with you, because they will. Enjoy your travels, near and far!
